Pathetic. That was one way to describe the way that this kid's life always played out. Let's set the scene. It's Thursday. Most kids are getting ready to go out and get so drunk that they come into classes either still drunk or hung over on Friday. Not this guy. Most kids are fawning over crushes, significant others, or even themselves. Not this guy. No. This guy was standing in the middle of the non-fiction aisle in Barnes & Noble. He was clad in the epitome of anti high fashion. A simple no name brand white zip up hoodie, tight black jeans, and a pair of gray sneakers covered his feet. His attention was slightly occupied by the newest memoirs that sat on the shelf in front of him. What a fascinating life.
So maybe you're asking, "Who is this pathetic excuse for a guy?!" Well isn't that obvious? We're talking about Las Vegas' own Nick Tierney. The Forgotten One. He wanted nothing more than to crawl in between the bookshelves and stay there. He wasn't an Emo for nothing. This kid was all kinds of troubled. All kinds of troubled with one kind of source. The female kind.
Reaching out, his fingertips ran over the spines of several books as he sighed. It had been just about 11 months since Audrey Truitt had broken his heart. She hadn't meant it. She'd just fallen out of love with him and in love with his ex-best friend. And quickly at that. The only problem with this whole situation was that Nick was still completely caught up on her. She still had complete control over his heart. So why had he successfully avoided her for the last 8 months?
Nick closed his eyes and leaned forward against the shelves. He was thinking about her again. He'd promised himself he'd stop. Ha. Yeah right. This guy had no control over his thoughts. Especially when it came to her. "Nicholas, stop it. You're obsessed and you need to back off. You're not needed, or wanted. ... And now you're talking to yourself."
Pushing off the bookshelf, he turned on his heels and knocked into someone. Both of them tumbled to the ground along with the books the other person was holding. "Fuck. I'm sorry." Nick pulled himself up, then crouched down to help pick up the books scattered on the ground. When he finally did look up, his eyes met those of the person he'd knocked into. Perfect, round, blue eyes met his dark brown ones and seemed to lock on. Nick's mind nearly imploded as his hands began to tremble and almost dropped the books he'd collected.
"Audrey?"

Audrey was just spending another one of her afternoons in her favorite book store. She was amazed each time by the variety of books she was allowed to choose from and it astonished her when ever she found a book even greater than one she had read before.
She loved the smell of new books. No matter what, books that she either owned or borrowed ended up somewhere where an either pleasant or very unpleasant smell attached itself to the fibers of each precious page.
A large pile of hard back and paper back books had developed in her arms as she had walked through the maze of bookshelves. It was fun looking through all the sheleves and finding a book that she knew that she'd enjoy when she got around to reading it.
That was one of Audrey's flaws though. She always did things, but sometimes she didn't fully follow through with the action. Like buying books, she did that to...well, just to know that if she was bored, she'd have something to entertain her later.
She tried to surpress her need to buy and do things she knew she wouldn't follow through with, but today was just one of those days where she needed to go book shopping.
Seven books. Audrey laughed and shook her head at herself. What are you doing Aud? No more books, just these seven, you'll be good with that. She decided to start walking towards the front desk to buy the books she'd collected.
I know! I'll keep my eyes on the ground so I won't look at any more books! Wow, brain fart much? So, this was not one of Audrey's smartest moves. Within the first few seconds of keeping her eyes on the ground, she ran into something, her books collapsed to the ground.
Super! She appologised to the person she ran into and started gather her books and tried separting hers and the other persons in two piles. Audrey looked up to apologise to the persons face then smiled. "Nick!" She wrapped her arms around his neck, clobering him in a bear hug. "I haven't seen you forever! How've you been?"

Nick couldn’t help but groan in displeasure. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Audrey. Not at all. In fact, it was quite the contrary. It may have been a year, but the boy was still a bit hung up on her. And that was putting it rather lightly.
It was true. Nick Tierney was still in love with Audrey Truitt. He had never been able to give her up. Especially not to his ex-best friend. That’s why he’d chosen to be the quiet faceless kid in her life for the past seven months.
He inspected the books that he was holding. Yeah, Audrey was still the same good-girl he had dated. That was for sure. He smiled as the familiar name of her favorite author appeared on the binding of the heavy hard cover book he held.
perhaps you can just hand her her books and slip out before she notices that it’s you. Well your big mouth has actually made that impossible. Hope you like being an idiot because you’re about to get put on the spot if she’s the same girl she used to be.
Nick mentally swatted his thoughts out of his mind. Yes, he had already gone too far. If he hadn’t yelled her name, it might have been easier to slip away, but now he had to at least seem interested in her life, which did, in fact, go on without him.
Then he felt it. The one thing that was sure to crush him. The familiar feeling of her arms fitting so perfectly around his neck. It brought back a few more memories than he wanted to remember.
As she launched herself at him, however, Nick was knocked off balance and the two toppled over so that she was now somehow lying on top of him… on the ground… in the middle of Barnes & Noble. Nick’s face turned a shade or two redder as he looked at Audrey.
”I’ve um… I’ve been alright. You know, keeping busy. New friends. How about you?” As they sat on the ground, Nick seemed to slowly be forgetting the fact that she wasn’t his. No, she wasn’t dating Nick anymore. It was just a matter of time before she brought him back to reality.
